Not my favorite of World War II books. I'm sure it's high acclaim is because of something way over my head, but to be honest, it was just kind of blah. Three women band together during World War II. It has very little to do with the Nazi's chasing them for whatever reason, but more about the reactions of these three women to the Nazis in their country. One woman recently widowed, very take charge, has brought together two other widows. One woman has a child, very innocent and still hopes for love. The third is closed, along with her two sons. Each has a story to tell in her own time, but to be honest, none are very awe inspiring.
Mind you, I know it must be difficult in this day and age to propose issues that are not over the top trying to manipulate emotions but in the same vein must evoke something to cling to the characters. It's a balance I'll never understand how to write, so I feel fairly judgey saying this. Regardless, the book was ok, but I feel like I connected or responded to many others during that time period.
