I never read Practical Magic, but I saw the movie, so I had a hint of what was going on in this one. And I'll admit, I really enjoyed it. There is a bit of the magical realism, but the book is more about what defines a person, and what makes a person feel at home. It can be a feeling, it can be a person you enjoy, or it can be a location. Or it can be that you just accept yourself for who you are. There were intricate relationships in this book, some even dating back to the Puritan Days, but almost all of them are relatable. This is a good book about the 3 siblings who are trying to live within their rules of magic, and the rules of life. OH MY STARS- I just saw the cover with the person on it. I have no idea what I was looking at since I just realized it was a girl's face.
4/5 stars

But what if you are a black woman who time travels to the early 1800's, where enslaved people are the norm in the United States, and cruelty is the expected way of discipline, both in the system, and within the family. A woman from the 1970's travels back into the 1800's every time an ancestor needs rescuing from death. The catch is that he is white. She returns to her own time when she too is near death. In fact, she returns back to her white husband. And in the 70's, that caused a lot of broken relationships with friends and family. Her husband goes back into time with her at one point, and he learns some lessons as well. A good book, and a hard book. The illustrations were excellent at depicting the points that needed to be shown. 5/5 stars

Franny is wanting to become an actor in NYC, and so our journey begins with her moving from day to day, fighting to beat her 3 year time line until she gives up, moves back home to be a teacher or possibly marry her fall back man. But things change, and circumstances change, and hence the story. However, as she uses her filofax, we see the handwritten entries in it, and that was a clever interjection into the prose of the book, as well as very funny and cute. There were no surprises, twists, or turns, but rather, it was more of a fun beachread. 4/5 stars This is a perfect summer book! A woman who is stuck in her life and feels completely out of control despite the fact that she tries desperately to be in control of everything ends up going on a trip with her sister to be a Viking (she was told it would be a spa weekend), she ends up learning not only a lot about her sister but about herself. Good book for cute, but also a good book to realize that we don't have to have it all to be strong. 4/5 stars
Ok, let's be honest- the cover just reeks of princess romance. But it actually kept me reading the entire time and I read it the day I got it. This book is actually not about the American girl falling in love with the Scottish prince (well, it is), but it is more centered on her family and how they need to handle it. On top of that, it is a romance, but it shows more about what constitutes a prince other than birth. What a fun book, and I will definitely be book talking it when school starts again! 3/5 stars Provided by NetGalley For those of you who are going to read it- make sure you understand that it goes backwards in time. That will help tremendously. Now, to the actual review. I think I was spoiled with Small Great Things. It was just so good and really raised my hackles about some things, as well as actually had me quoting some of the lines. However, with this book, it was good, but I don't know that I am any different. Maybe because it is about a subject that most of us already have strong opinions about (pro-choice/pro-life), but it was interesting to see all the different parties that are involved in a women's clinic. There were a couple of good twists (one you could see coming, one I didn't but other people did), and it definitely is a well written and thoroughly researched book. But it didn't change me like some other books did. And I also have to applaud my book club. I loved our discussion despite the fact that we have all very different ideas and beliefs. It was what a conversation should be for anything. |
