Celeste Ng has such a poignant ability to show the extreme selfishness in people who think they are being altruistic. I am amazed again at her second novel where two families converge and discover that dreams are not dependent on perceived stability. Mia and Pearl, a mother and daughter who move according to Mia's artistic whim end up in a rented apartment of a traditional family with 4 children. As the novel progresses, the assumptions of people ruin lives, and the quiet strength and comfort of seemingly unstable Mia and Pearl. This is definitely another winner that I am quite sure my high school students will talk about and it will grow, like little fires, in popularity.
