I rated this after reading another book about this family so my rating is more in comparison about how the Vanderbilt women were portrayed. And dog gone it, they were a messed up family, but no more messed up than any other family it seemed. And I like that. In the background of expectations of wives, old money vs. new money, and suffrage, we learn how Alva has brought her own family out of near ruin to becoming the wealthiest woman in the Gilded Age. But there were no heroes, just regular people that I felt I could relate to. Well done, Therese Anne Fowler. You brought to light another person I didn't know too much about. Alva and Zelda are now my subject matter when there is an awkward pause in conversation.
4/5 stars

3/5 stars I can't say I was overwhelmed by the book, but it wasn't something I dreaded. I guess that's why 3 stars exist. It was pretty interesting about a woman who is reviving herself after becoming an overnight sensation with her photography named (duh) Still Life with Bread Crumbs. She has no run out of money years later and has moved to a small town that made me think a little bit about Little House on the Prairie. But that isn't a good comparison because this book had cars and cell phones. There were some sad parts, some funny parts, and some hopeful parts. The important thing is that it's probably a good read for me, a middle aged woman. But the high school students may not get the nuances. |
