Why have I not tapped into this amazing mystery sooner? I've heard great things about it, and I finally downloaded it and yup, it's amazing. To be able to intertwine and continue a murder mystery over a span of almost 100 years is brilliant, not to mention a great mystery for Young Adults and teens. As an Agatha Christie fan (who in my opinion is the greatest mystery writer of all time), I have to say that this ranks up there with the master. And yes, I already have downloaded the 2nd and will be reading the 3rd right after that. For those who know me, this is amazingly high praise. For those who don't know me, then now you know this is amazingly high praise.

What a cute story that personifies the thoughts of an ancient tree which sees the people of the neighborhood and the fauna as friends. And as the tree witnesses unkind acts of racism as well it's own possibility of cutting down, it's patience and yet desire to make things right shows us what it's like to be human. Think of it- a tree tells us humans how we ought to act. Love it! This is a simply written story with the layers of implications applicable to all ages. 3/5 stars I liked the stories, at least the ones that I felt I understood. There were some things that I don't think I'll ever understand since I rarely come into the culture of a group of African American women. But that's why I wanted to read the book, to try to understand. I came out knowing that there are somethings I get, and some I don't, but it's always good to expose ourselves to new cultures/lifestyles/perspectives. And this one did that. 4/5 stars One of my reasons for rating books is if it makes me want to know more about another subject or book. This book made me want to read Dr. Zivago because of the huge spy network it took to get it into the hands of the Russians. This was also a book about the Russian author and his muse. The chapters were very interesting in how they were titled, with crosshatches that showed the progression of the characters. And of course, it is interesting to see that the lifestyles that are so commonplace today were in such an underground in the 50's, yet very vibrant. There were some confusing parts such as the chorus of the steno girls, but also they were a great narration once I figured out who they were, more like backup singers than main players. I'm always interested when there are new ways of writing books even after all these years of literary styles. 4/5 stars What a good take on the Christmas Carol. By golly, what happens if the whole 3 ghosts scenario doesn't really work? And then the Scrooge dies? Holly Chase is now half dead, half alive, and she realizes the whole scenario of Christmas Carol is a corporation of ghosts who pick a new Scrooge every year. And along the way, there are secrets that get revealed. Very cute for the Christmas time. 5/5 stars I understand why this book got so many rave reviews. I love how World War II affected so many different parts of the world. And to think that it was based on real people. The viewpoints of all points of the war from the doctors who performed horrific experiments to the women called the Rabbits who each came out a different woman. I keep thinking that I'm exhausted of books about WWII, but this is just one more that seems to impact me. 4/5 stars
Haven't read the actual book, but I did enjoy the graphic novel. It actually makes me want to read the novel version as I know there are more things that I missed that would only enhance the plot. Not knowing a lot about mythology, this really helps to give me a heads up to understand what is happening when I read the novel. 4/5 stars
Definitely not Leigh Bardugo's YA. This one is gritty with necromancy, horror, and shows what happens to those who never really fit in. I'm excited to see what happens in the next one, as there are definite questions as to what happened to a couple of people. The alternating view points is not hard to follow or annoying, but rather keeps me intrigued as to find out what happened in the past and how it affects everything happening now and will affect the future. It was so intricate, so I'm not even going to try to explain what happened, other than it is set at Yale and apparently there are real secret societies that like to dabble in the paranormal. Rory Gilmore was never named in the book, however. Just letting you know. 4/5 stars Oh, sweet romance. Oh sweet heartache. Oh, sweet London. I truly do believe in love at first sight (I married him), but what would have happened if he ended up dating my best friend? And there you have it- the premise of the book. But it's not a rom-com, it's a true what if scenario that makes you hurt for all those involved. Good book. 3/5 stars This is one of the books where if you explain it, it sounds really good. Murder mystery, bizarre art world, crazy people in the LA scene. But it is so stinkin' slow. There were good descriptions, but too much rumination about people and thoughts. It definitely picked up towards the end, but it was hard to concentrate at first. And again, good murder mystery. 5/5 stars
Listened to this with my daughter. I can't help but say that Linda Sue Park is one of my favorite people. I've never had the pleasure to meet her, but I've heard her many times through librarian conferences, We Need Diverse books, etc. And after seeing her so many times, when I reread this book, I have to say the book is even more poignant, knowing this is a passion of hers- not just to entertain, but to change the world from water in the Sudan to demonstrating all the different meanings of Buffalo. Sigh, read the book, try not to cry, and Linda, if you're out there, know that you are my hero! 5/5 stars Seriously creepy how perfectly this book was what I needed. It is set up with not just good thoughts, but real tools to use as we battle everyday with our thoughts, things that really stink in our lives, etc. Levi is not only good at giving us real things to do, but also gives us examples of his life that make him real as well. He's one of us- not just a speaker who has mastered it all. Well done, Mr. Levi Lusko! And the audio book is narrated by him, so it's like he's talking to me personally. 5/5 stars This is such a tastefully done book. It was real and honest, but not to the point where the reader has to go out and demolish every single person during the time period of the Japanese internment camps. Yes, of course it is not only a historical reminder of what we are embarrassingly capable of as human beings, but also a warning of what is still a possibility when fear drives us. It also shows that despite the unfairness of everything, there are amazing people who are able to rise above everything and show the world what I would consider a person with true grit has. This would be a good book for a high school requirement of history |
