I was going to put this at three stars, but yesterday (July, a little over a month since I read the book), my husband was talking to me about it, and I couldn't remember anything about the book. So, it went down to a 2 star. I guess it didn't make that much of an impression on me. I was ok with it during the whole book, and I'll be honest, I think I liked it better than Goldfinch, which only makes me think of all the drugs the characters did. In this book, they drank a lot, and went into this weird psycho thing where they thought they were animals one night. Then something bad happens, and the majority of the book is how they are trying to cover it all up. In the meantime there is a professor who is oddly non-caring but eccentric so they all love him. I wouldn't NOT recommend the book, but I don't have anyone in mind of who I think would enjoy it. And my brother hated it. That may have influenced me, as I'm not strong enough to fight his power of persuasion

I really like Paula McLain, so I was a little disappointed in this book. I twas more about the love romance of Marie Curie rather than her general life. I am not sure why I was disappointed, since the other books are also about the relationships of women between the men, but I think because Marie Curie wasn't the woman-behind-the-man, I thought this one would really play her up. But, the writing was good, and the narration was too. 4/5 stars It wasn't the same as the Hate U Give, but it was still pretty good. And I read that Angie Thomas made the protagonist as a young girl that you don't necessarily feel sorry for- she's not always likeable. However, it had it's good moments and I again appreciate learning about different family dynamics, such as a famous rapper who got shot, so the family is learning to live in the aftermath. Or the in-laws who love the kids, but aren't super keen on the daughter-in-law. Or, what I enjoyed the most, was learning about the rapping contests. Amazing, and incredible once I understood that people come up with their raps off the top of their heads. I had no idea. A good book, and Angie Thomas is still an amazing writer in my opinion. 3/5 stars I had so much hope for this book. It wasn't bad, but for it to be based on the Mystery, Inc. kiddos, I was a little disappointed in that it didn't have the same feel. The characters were based on the same gang, but different (ie Velma's intellingence in the book was changed to a kick-butt heroine, who left the intelligent decisions to the Daphne character. I know it's confusing, but you would get it if you choose to read the book). I guess what I was disappointed about was where the book was going. It didn't have the goofy gang appeal at the end, but rather the gang was just trying to get back together because their lives ended up being messes all around- drugs, jail, in-patient wards, etc. Let's just say, I was hoping for the cartoon version, but rather got the Riverdale version. Never saw Riverdale, by the way, so that comparison may be really off. 3/5 stars
I love, adore and want to be Audrey Hepburn. However, this book didn't make me want to see her all of the sudden when a huge couch ends up in my tiny apartment and seems to bring the apparition of Audrey with it. I am not sure what I was expecting with this book, and I can't say it was horrible to read. It was actually kind of cute in a way. And there was a love triangle. In an adult book! I'm so used to reading YA with love triangles, I have to say I was thrown a little off. But overall, cute. And there was some interesting discussion about it with my book club. However, I will warn those of you out there itching to read the book. Just beware that it is a part one. There are a lot of loose ends that I would suggest you prepare yourself by getting book two (I think it's with Marilyn Monroe) to pick up right after you read Audrey. 5/5 stars
I haven't yet read Lilac Girls, but I heard that's even better than this book. In Lost Roses, set during the Russian Revolution, there were three girls who were affected in different ways, and hence, three different voices. Each was unique, but at the same time, I didn't ever feel like I had to go through one to get to the other. You know how there are sometimes the different voices that you just kind of skim over? That wouldn't happen in this book. And I also applaud the Russian Revolution timeline. While I am ok with WWI and WWII, this was a different world changing event, so I felt like I was learning something kind of new. Well done, Martha Hall Kelly and Barnes and Noble for picking this book! 4/5 stars My son got this book and loved it, so of course I had to read it, and I'm glad I did. It was amazingly done. Ms. Brosgol is so talented to reach out to the readers to let them know that their feelings of being left out and wanting more are not uncommon, and that there are lots of us out there who are insecure. But she also gives us insight on how to embrace who we are. And this book about a young Russian girl who learned this lesson during summer camp. I still think about the book and will comment on it to my son, so the value goes far beyond entertainment. |
