My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The People We Keep is touted as a Young Adult book. It is, but more because it is important to remember the main character is a young adult. She was given a horrible deck- a mother who left when she was so young, a father who provided her a camper/RV while he was away with his girlfriend soon to be wife, and very few people who were able to break her exterior. And so when she runs away, from many people and things, it's important to remember she is thinking like a teen, and not the adult. Many times I was frustrated with her choices, with her ruining her chances for happiness. But again, she's a kid. And during her run and learning the street smarts to survive, she slowly finds the importance of trusting people- and those are the ones to keep.
**Note, this is more appropriate for the older YA**
