My rating: 4 of 5 stars
We are so amazed at Anne Frank and her family living silently in an attic, never allowing anyone to know they live there. With the Downstairs Girl, we see a similar concept, but with a young girl and the elderly man who raised her have found a basement to stay in during the post Civil War era. The caveat? They are of Asian descent. So in the midst of all this, with women looking for equality, they turn to the newspapers and their advice columns. Of course, there is much much more to the story, including family secrets, death threats, and even a slight love interest. Well written, fast moving plot, and a renewed take on our country's history, I believe many will enjoy this book.
