I'm being generous with this 3 star. I will usually glance at a book's description, but I don't often put too much stock into it so that I have no preconceived notions of what the book will be about. Usually that works really well for me. Not in this one.
The writing was ok. If I were to base my rating on the writing, it would be only a 2 star. Now, that's being harsh and critical since clearly you all can see that I'm not writer. However, I just read a book by Pat Conroy who probably was what Ms. Howard was trying to accomplish with her writing. Maybe. But then again, this is a young adult.
So, there are these two sisters who grew up with an extremely narcissistic mother. We never meet her, by the way. Anyway, they are both artists- one is a writer, the other a ballet dancer. After a few years of not seeing each other, they agree to go to a "camp" where they are given mentors and must focus on their craft constantly. Cool so far. But then, this is where I was taken completely off guard, so if you want to read the book, you're welcome. Surprise, the camp has lots of fairies that have to be given a "tithe" (one of the campers) every 7 years so they can feed on his/her energy. Now there is competition between sisters, and their prospective boyfriends (sort of, you'll see), and of course, the roomies. It was ok, but I was taken off guard by that main plot twist. Oh, and to make sure there are no other surprises, this is not Young Adult as I said before, this is New Adult. There are some explicit scenes...
