My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It was presented at book club that the book was written in a very choppy manner. I agree, and it had a huge chunk in the middle which was all backstory of Maisie Dobbs. But I will say that it kept my interest the whole time. It starts out with Maisie starting her own detective agency and getting a client. By solving the client's inquiry, she actually stumbles upon another mystery at a much higher cost of life. But in the middle of all this, there is the fact of how she came to be who she was. I enjoyed it, and I would say that I may read the next ones if I have time. I thought the premises to be good, although a bit on the side of "feeling" rather than facts because I like to think that I can figure things out with the detectives. But overall, quite enjoyable.
