Time travel is so popular, now. But what if you are a black woman who time travels to the early 1800's, where enslaved people are the norm in the United States, and cruelty is the expected way of discipline, both in the system, and within the family. A woman from the 1970's travels back into the 1800's every time an ancestor needs rescuing from death. The catch is that he is white. She returns to her own time when she too is near death. In fact, she returns back to her white husband. And in the 70's, that caused a lot of broken relationships with friends and family. Her husband goes back into time with her at one point, and he learns some lessons as well. A good book, and a hard book. The illustrations were excellent at depicting the points that needed to be shown.
