Ok, so there is a bad, bad man who has realized just how psychopathic he is, and he has decided to take a wife for a new plaything. But here, Jack is in luck because Grace is good, but her younger sister Millie who has Downs Syndrome is better. And once Millie graduates from her residential school, she will be living with them, but exuding the smell of fear that Jack craves.
So, while the outline of the book is pretty good, I just didn't get into the fact that Jack was so cognizant of who and what he is. I'm sure that there is some truth to psychopaths knowing their abnormalities, but this was just a little too much for me. And I can't say I always felt the fear that I probably should have with Grace. For instance, I kind of feel like any infraction, real or perceived, would have generated some punishment on Grace. But Jack said he felt sad that Grace was behaving because then he couldn't punish her. Huh. Maybe it's how sadistic people are, but I'm assuming not. He just didn't fit the psychopathic bill.
