3/5 stars I am giving this a 3 star which I was hoping for more. I'm not sure what it was about the book, but it just didn't grab me. A young girl whose parents have died (we are not sure how), she is taking care of her brother (who has brought home a baby who is his son), and she has now been enlisted to help an angry peer who has just enlisted in her small hometown school. She also is the leader of a band of misfits, which never makes sense as to how they are together. It's not a bad book and I never really dreaded reading it. But I will say that the ending turned more into a science fiction book. And if it is set in the future, nothing else is advanced (like technology, culture, etc) to indicate that people are able to travel all the way to the non-planet Pluto. Characters could have been more drawn out. I really wanted to like this book because I have a lot of respect for K. Ancrum when I saw her at NOVA teen fest. It's not a bad book, and I will definitely recommend it to students at the school (I have one girl in mind), but it just didn't catch me the way I was expecting. |
