Good mystery. There were some pretty good twists, but a couple of questions that I may have still had that didn't quite fit. But they weren't super important- And I didn't figure it out. I'm not a super sleuth, so that doesn't mean anything, but still, it's fun to be surprised. After reading Girl on the Train and the world of alcoholic unreliable narrators, you think I would have figured it out. But nope. And that didn't give it away, so don't be judgy that I just spilled the beans. I didn't. Enjoyed it. Fun to read. I love good mysteries.

5/5 stars I can totally see how this earned an award this year. It is full of feeling, and I won't be embarrassed to say that I actually teared up a little bit. It is based on a family of Latinos, but it can be applied to any relationship between a mother and a daughter, or the perceptions of each other's lives. I would have loved to read this book first as a teenager, and then later as a mother, but that won't happen. Hopefully a teen will be able to do this and see how the book speaks to them in different parts of their lives. All I have to say is that I appreciate these books that helps remind me what a teen sees and feels. 2/5 stars Meh. The characters were flat, but there was potential, hence the 2 stars. There were some extremely confusing parts, and a couple of twists that weren't really well explained, but it was assumed the reader should get them right away. I don't think any of us at book club got the final twist. But the cover is really cool! 4.5 stars I was super impressed with Thirteenth Tale (her first book), and while I don't think this one is as good, I do think it comes as a close 2nd. Very close. I think that the more that I talked about it with the book club, the more I realized there were some pretty intricate things that made the book even more well written. The beginning was hard to follow, but the farther I went in, the more I was intrigued and had to figure out who the little girl was. I felt deeply for all the characters, and I hated those who were supposed to be hated. I still think of them as scum and I'm glad they don't really exist. 2/5 stars 2 stars only because I applaud the new territory of asexuality. But for the most part, I didn't like the characters, didn't like the story, and thought all together there were far too many issues at play in the book. The relationships between the friends and the romances didn't really make sense to me. 2/5 stars I loved the old movie with Jodi Foster, and didn't even mind the movie with Jami Lee Curtis. But the book was so different! I find it amazing how the older published books tend to be a lot more forthcoming about some issues and just flat out state things such as racism, smoking, etc. The book only included the thoughts of Annabel, not both her and her mother, which I totally thought was hilarious in the movies. It was pretty entertaining nonetheless, but I don't think I'll read the series. I believe this only makes the 2nd book where I liked the movie better. 4/5 stars Excellent book that gave the perfect blend of history, characterization, and zombies. Knowing the background of some of the allusions Justina Ireland made has given a bigger meaning to the story. I can honestly say the characters were written in 3D, and the action kept me going. The ending was good, too, in that if I choose to not read the 2nd book, I'll still be satisfied. However, to all those who are to read this book, I highly recommend you doing your research as the situations and attitudes are all written for a historical purpose. 3/5 stars
I was hoping for more, but it was just like The Other Einstein. I appreciated the fact that it brought to light some things I had no idea about Hedy Lamarr. In fact, I liked reading about her first marriage, but it kind of seemed to speed up at the end to get all the information. If the premise of the book was about how Hedy Lamarr redesigned torpedoes in WWII, then I would have expected more about that. But like I said, I was more intrigued about her role as the Austrian wife. It was ok, but I would describe it more of a fiction than research-based fiction. 4/5 stars What a great premise of a book- a young boy, Evan Hansen, is told to write self-affirmation letters to himself. Another "loner" and labeled bad boy finds a letter, and after he takes his own life, his parents find the letter, thinking that their son had a best friend, Evan Hansen. Evan is stuck to continue the charade and along the way finds that there are people out there that are friends, and that he doesn't have to be alone. I heard this was a musical, so it was interesting to read while thinking about the songs that could have been highlighted. Great book for the YA collection! |
