I'm always a sucker for learning about other cultures, so this one definitely did not disappoint. Set in Vietnam in a couple of time periods (the Vietnam War and a generation earlier as the country began to divide over communism), a young girl in the 70's is being taken care of her grandmother. During this time, we see the fear of air raids, and Grandmother tells her charge of similar instances in the past. I learned so much about the history of Vietnam from another perspective. And the resilience of the women and people back then was something I wonder if I have what it takes to be them. Peppered with proverbs of the country, we can learn so much from this book that evokes an appreciation for those who are innocent in war and what drives them to survive.
