I can't tell you how much I learned/was exposed to. I know that there are lots of people in jail that have been unjustly accused, as well as the disproportionate rate of incarcerated black inmates compared to incarcerated white inmates. And this book really highlights some of the reasons (false testimonies, paid off witnesses, unethical "experts"). But overall, this books gives me a renewed sense of the huge undertaking to prove the innocence of those already convicted. And most lawyers to take on the challenge do not do it for the money. Good thing because there is no money. But John Grisham artfully portrayed the life and passion of those who not only fight for the unjustly accused, but also of the people who are themselves in prison, often awaiting death row. Following one main story, but interjected with a couple of other cases (some taken, some not taken), the reader gets to see just a glimpse of some of the injustices in our justice system. It is a scary scary book when you really think about it.
