I'm not one for horror, but this was pretty interesting. I didn't know a whole lot about the Irish Fairy folk lore, but I have to say it is nothing like Disney presents.
Kids are being "called" after they turn 10. They go to the world of the exiled Fey who are bitter and cruel. After what seems like a day in the grey, colorless world, the children are either killed or maimed and returned back to the "real" world, which only took 3 minutes and 4 seconds. So these kids are being trained to survive the call. Nessa is being trained even though she was born with polio or cerebal palsy, or something that has twisted her legs. But she is determined to not let that change her fate when she is called. She is beautiful, and even the bully of the school is ashamed to want her. But he does, and that does not bode well for Nessa.
I had to look several things up as I do not know the culture very well, but that's what I like about reading. Also, I don't know what is acceptable in Ireland as far as cussing, but I have to say there may have been phrases that wouldn't bode so well over here. So I will chalk it up to cultural differences.
