Ugh, I keep saying how I refuse to read another World War book (one or two), and then I get forced to read one due to a book club, and then, dag nabbit, if I don't really enjoy the book. This one was pretty cool in that it was about World War I and then switched to post World War II. I will say I listened to this book, and the narrator was pretty awesome, especially with the stutter of Eve. I guess it seemed like a deficiency that was turned into a positive, and I know there are a lot of us who can't seem to get those words out, so I felt like I could relate.
The plot was intricate but not. I can honestly say that while there were two plot lines that eventually converged, I enjoyed both of them equally. Let's admit it, people, sometimes when authors switch times or people we get through the book to find out about one of the characters and put up with the alternate. But not so with this one. And well thought out, Ms. Quinn, for the alternate 1st and 3rd person narratives. Definitely a literary device that worked extremely well for all intents and purposes.
So why only 4 stars? Not sure. Didn't change my life, or cause me to think and dwell on it for days on end. But it is one I will highly recommend on the basis of friendship, war, and kick butt women who suffered much in order to do what they felt was right, especially in the day that women were meant to be only wives.
