Maybe 4 stars. DON'T listen to it, it helps to read it. I started to listen, but there were so many different words from the culture I had no idea what was being said. One person's name I swear was Ruthie, but it was nothing like that.
Maya is born with a horoscope that is considered bad luck. She is the daughter of the Raja (King, not the tiger from Aladdin), but her mother died in childbirth. The harem was cruel to her because she is bad luck. Then, it's time for her to get married, but an army is coming, so she quickly decides on Aman, and he takes her to be his queen. He's a good guy- nice, attentive, not pushy, treats her as an equal. But he's secretive, and Maya is not sure that there is trust between the two. But the kicker is that she is in a magical kingdom, and there are many things that are secret there.
All in all, it was a great book. I loved the character's growth, I loved the plot twists, and I loved learning about another culture. But that was also the rub. I had a hard time understanding a lot of things happening because I'm not familiar with the culture of reincarnation and Otherworldly ideas. Overall, though, I think it was a good choice for our state's (commonwealth's) Readers' Choice books.
