My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I truly do love books that give me another glimpse into another culture, and this one did not disappoint. I learned, first, that Sankofa is a cool African term that loosely means to retrieve. As a woman learns of her father, whom she never met or was told about, she goes to find where her father lives in Africa. Surprise! Her father is the ruler of the country! (which is why it is 3 stars- seemed very oddly contrived). As we learn about her parents' love life and the demise of it, and how he rose to power (which was both positive and negative), we see the change in the woman. But even more impressive is how this book shows us how even though we are not raised in a certain place, we always have our roots that make us who we are.
