I thought I knew this story. I read the book a few times. I even saw the play (in the same room as Jason Reynolds- swoon!) at the Kennedy Center. And yet, this graphic novel gave the story another dimension to the book. The art was so amazing- clearly a story almost within itself. The graphic novel did not completely duplicate the words from the book- and so was not just an illustration. The blocking of the pictures were statements in themselves. The words could even be illustrated as unique characters in the story. And the ending still got to me, even though I knew how it would end- I still gasped. This is not a retelling of the Long Way Down- it is another facet to the message Jason Reynolds has dedicated his life to tell.
