Meh. In Other Lands had a great premise, and there were definitely parts that had me giggle internally (loved the evil Unicorn scene), but for the most part, I kind of feel like this book was a few hundred pages too long. The premise was good- irascible boy is able to go to fairyland to fight other species, falls in love with warring elf, but has a love triangle with gorgeous heart throb warring human. I can't decide if I thought there was too much melding of adventure and treatise creating with daily lives of soldiers, or if the two needed to be completely separate. It just never really seemed to click with me. But like I said before, there were some redeeming parts (I dare anyone to not laugh at the role reversal of genders among elves as a humorous commentary on our own culture's perspectives), so I do give this a 3 star. And I will also admit that after talking amongst the book clubbers of this book, I did have a greater appreciation for the book. Let's just say it's good for some, but not for all.
3/5 stars
