I had been wanting to read this book, and so I was really excited when it came up for a book club, forcing me to read it in a timely manner. I can't say it exposed me to anything that was unique in my understanding of Mexican culture, but it was a good book, nonetheless. I appreciated the fact that there was a divide between the two sisters in their expectations of life- one wanted the life of a mother and wife, which according to their mother is what is the perfect Mexican daughter. The other wanted to go to college and be independent. But more importantly, I appreciated the book more for the fact that the reader was able to travel down the slippery slope of depression. It was so gradual, that I felt like the book was about the characters, not necessarily about just depression. And that is important to read about for any culture.
