World War II, Amsterdam. A young girl is working to survive, finding and delivering hard to find articles for people such as cigarettes, certain foods, etc. One of the people she delivers to has asked her to find a girl (who had a blue coat) that she was hiding. She also has gotten close to her boyfriend's brother, as they are trying to get over the grief of losing the boyfriend in the war. In the meantime, they are all doing their part to save as many people as possible, and she is learning that there is a bigger picture than earning money by finding cigarettes for people. (that sounded petty, but it wasn't meant to be)
So, I'm going between 3 and 4 stars on this one. One one hand, it's perfect for high school students who can relate to realizing that there is always a bigger picture out there that they can be a part of. It also had a good ending, one that was pretty typical probably, but not expected. But I guess I'm having a hard time with these historical fictions because I find that today's society and values are usually personified into the history. Not sure if that made sense, so I won't delve deeper, but I want to learn attitudes of that day as opposed to today's attitudes in yesteryear's society.
Anyway, I will have no problem book talking this book when school starts and I'm sure that it will be checked out quite often.
