My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I learned a lot from this book, and any book that helps me understand just a little more about a situation deserves a 5 star. So while I appreciate a good Civil War or pre-Civil War book, this book had the dimension of what it was like to be sold as an enslaved person, what it was like during Reconstruction (which was just another form of hardship and inequity for the "freed"), and then about a teacher from the 80's who is digging into that past. But so heartening was again the ingenuity of people - finding the lost family and friends who had been ripped apart for cruel monetary gains. I loved the main characters in the book, the ending of the book (for the most part), and the connection to the teacher from the 80's. Lisa Wingate, you are my becoming one of my favorite authors. Not only do you show me more empathy, you do it with beautiful writing. Thank you.
