3/5 stars Mrs. Lewis was not married to Mr. Lewis for the majority of the book. That's how long it took for her to become Mrs. Lewis. Almost the entire book. And it took a very, very long time. I think I was more interested in her horrible marriage to her first husband, who was not a very nice man. And I had better attention when she was talking with the friends of Mr. Lewis (like Mr. Tolkein). But a lot of things were extremely repetitive. Not sure if it was the writing of her life, but regardless, I just had no affinity for our dear Mrs. Lewis. Maybe she was one of those super smart people who are just awkward in life. Maybe she, being the victim of an abusive relationship, had no feeling of confidence and seemed to lack focus on what she really wanted. Or, maybe she and I would just never be friends who would go out for coffee and talk for hours. I did, however, up this a star after discussing the book with my book club, so I do give it kudos (now), for showing her side of a faulty heroine in a way. Still never going out for coffee with her, though, if she were alive today and my next door neighbor (which, by the way, if my real next door neighbor is reading this, I would totally go out for coffee with you). |
