After discussing this book with my book club, I can say I have a better appreciation for the book than I did going into the book club. We discussed the layers of the book, about there is a hunger in life, as well as a literal hunger. We discussed the effects of starvation on someone, such as believing that there are super powers. And we discussed the different people and elements of how life is intricately revolved around each of these elements.
What I can't understand is the sand. Where did it come from? And the pigs- what the heck? Was this realistic fantasy? Was it just an unreliable narrator? Pick a genre, man!
I did appreciate that there was in no way, shape, or form, a positive outlook on anorexia. It was clearly shown that it impacts your nails, your teeth, and your heart for a life-long impact. And, I appreciated how the romance ended. It was a perfect solution, in my opinion, that shows realistic (finally, something I understand) mature relationships.
So again, I thought the premise was great, the focus of starvation exquisitely portrayed, and the relationships clearly detailed. But again, the sand, the pigs, and the super human smells??? I can't get past it.
